- "Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you
- to be ignorant."
-
- I Corinthians 12:1, New International Version (NIV)
-
-
- "THIRTY SPIRITUAL GIFTS" can help you determine your spiritual gifts. This
- is a vitally important exercise which you should approach seriously and with
- prayer. Please note, however, that the results will NOT be a completely
- accurate indication of your spiritual gifts, but only a guide which may or
- may not be useful to you.
-
- a. What are "spiritual gifts"? Here is one of many possible definitions:
- "Spiritual gifts are supernatural abilities distributed by the Holy Spirit
- among members of the Body of Christ; the gifts are special attributes given
- by God's grace to empower His people to serve Him and other people more
- effectively."
-
- b. Who gets spiritual gifts? The Bible states clearly that every
- believer has at least one spiritual gift. I Peter 4:10 says, "As each one
- has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good
- stewards of the manifold grace of God." (This and subsequent Bible quotes on
- this page are from the New American Standard Bible, or NASB.) Believers are
- not limited to just one gift, as most have a mixture of gifts which they can
- use at various times depending on the circumstances and the needs of the
- moment.
-
- c. Who decides what gifts we receive? I Corinthians 12:11 says that
- the Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts "to each one individually just
- as He wills." Gifts are distributed equally among men and women, "for you
- are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:28)
-
- d. Why are the gifts given?
-
- (1) I Corinthians 12:7 -- "to each one is given the manifestation
- of the Spirit for the common good."
-
- (2) Ephesians 4:12-13 -- "for the equipping of the saints for the
- work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all
- attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to
- a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fulness of
- Christ."
-
- (3) I Peter 4:10 -- "employ it in serving one another, as good
- stewards...."
-
- (4) Hebrews 2:3-4 says that God confirmed the truth of the gospel
- of salvation "by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of
- the Holy Spirit according to His own will."

- e. What about my natural talents and abilities?
-
- (1) There is no doubt God can use your natural talents and
- abilities. For example, some people have natural musical ability which they
- can put to good use as Christians.
-
- (2) However, spiritual gifts are more supernatural than natural.
- For example, if a Christian lays hands on a blind woman and prays for her to
- receive her sight, we all recognize that the Christian does not have the
- power to restore sight. If God restores the woman's sight, it was His
- mighty power channeled through the believer which made the miracle possible.
-
- f. What about normal Christian roles and activities? There are some
- things expected of every Christian. All Christians, for example, are
- commanded to witness for Christ, but not all have the missionary gift, nor
- are all evangelists. Lack of these gifts, however, cannot be used as an
- excuse to avoid witnessing!
-
- g. What if I can't identify any particular gift?
-
- (1) If someone accepted Christ yesterday, we wouldn't expect the
- brand-new Christian to instantly identify his or her spiritual gifts. In
- fact, it may be years before the Lord begins manifesting a particular gift
- in that person's life.
-
- (2) If you are not able to identify any particular gift as yours,
- then remember that your relationship to the Giver is far more important than
- the gifts. Concentrate on serving Him to the very best of your ability,
- however small or limited you perceive that to be. Simply "trust and obey,"
- and God will bless you accordingly.
